Every operating system has little what are commonly called ‘annoyances’ – things just just stop working or working properly for no reason at all. Often an easy fix (once you work out how), but here’s some software that makes it much easier.
Enter Fixwin. A great freeware program by The Windows Club that, at the click of a button, fixes over 50 of those annoyances.
For example, fix the recycle bin if missing from your desktop, fix explorer.exe if not starting with windows, thumbnails not working are some.
There are also some problems that the program can fix that only advanced users may be aware of – ‘reset TCP/IP to default state’ is one. But mostly it’s a pretty user friendly program.
Download the Vista /Windows 7 version 1.2 here, and the Windows 8 / 8.1 specific version here.
The great thing about this program is that it’s portable – You don’t install it. Just extract and run the .exe file. So it’s a handy utility to throw onto a USB stick and take it to another computer.
Starting it up presents you with the following screen:
It is advisable to always create a system restore point before starting – just to be safe. Once done, you can get the program to scan your files for integrity, or pick one of the options on the left for your ‘quick fix’ items.
Windows Explorer – here’s what comes up when you select it:
As you can see, it lists the problems and each has a ‘fix’ button to click on. Couldn’t be easier could it?
Internet and Connectivity –
Again, find your ‘annoyance’ and click ‘fix’.
What I also like is that the program doesn’t hide what it’s doing. The PDF manual lists every entry change it will make.
I think it’s a great utility to keep handy if you happen to experience one of those little things that just stops working for no reason at all.
