Backup your PHPBB SQL database

March 15, 2007
backup, PHPBB

I need to regularly backup my database on a forum that my wife runs. Why? Because if I lose the data, my wife will not understand why something like that can happen, and will have my balls for breakfast.

Note, this will not backup the actual software, only the SQL database. You can use a FTP program to easily backup your forum software.

Auto backup:
Here is a great site that will allow for auto backup of your SQL database. There is even an option to email it to you too.

Manual backup:
Here is a thread from the PHPBB site forums that explains how to do a manual backup, and well as a restore.

Note –

  • If you are restoring big SQL databases (ie greater than 2M), get Big Dump.
  • If your domain or script path has changed, get Auto Cookies Mod Script.

Unbrick your WRT54G V5

bricked, DD-WRT, firmware, Linksys, WRT54G, WRTG54GV5

I decided to share my experiences below on how to unbrick my Linksys WRT54G V5 wireless router – it was bricked after I had a problem (after) installing open source firmware, and I could not find specific instructions for the V5. Having nothing to lose, as it wasn’t working, I followed similar instructions for the V4 series.

I have a couple of wireless routers at home. Having heard so much about the Linksys WRT54G being a good router to run open source firmware, I decided to buy one.

The firmware I put on it was DD-WRT . It has a good user base and support, and being easy to use I was quiet happy with it.

Then the fun started. Somehow, the power plug for the router was not sitting in the power point properly, so the unit was powering off/on in succession. Then the unit would not boot up. The power LED was flashing, and the port LEDs were not coming on when I plugged the Cat5 cables into them.

Oh no, have I ‘bricked’ the Linksys – two days after I have bought it? I did a bit of searching around and All the info I could find was for earlier model WRT54G routers that use a intel chip. The V5 does not.

Safety tip to configure Cisco router remotely

Cisco, Reload, Router

Routers at a remote location can be safely configured by using a reload command first. Huh? Read on…..

Before any configuration changes are made, issue a reload command to the remote router:

reload in 30 Instructs the router to reboot in 30 minutes.
or
reload at 00:00 to reload at a specific time.

The idea behind this is that if you lock yourself out of the router whilst configuring it (assuming you have NOT saved any changes), the router will reload and you should be able to access the router again.

If your configuration changes are successful, a reload cancel command will stop the pending reload.
