A company called Human Monitoring Ltd have recently announced a new image compression technology based on the existing h.264 standard (which that has been around a while and you may have come across it with video files).

The advantage of using an existing standard as opposed to creating a new one is that it can reuse existing encoding hardware that is already in place in millions of cameras and chipsets worldwide. Pretty smart.

Human Monitoring’s hipix™ patent pending technology utilises the existing h.264 video Codec to achieve two to seven times more effective still image compression compared to JPEG images. Sounds almost too good to be true, but if you check out the demos on their website, you will be suitably impressed.

To view hipix images on a computer or mobile device, users must initially download a viewer and to create or convert images users need the hipix “Wiz” application. The applications are available for Windows, Linux and Android operating systems.

Just think of the how much bandwidth could be saved when emailing or sending photos over the internet – all while keeping a very high quality image.

Check out the video demo:

More info can be found on the hipix website here.

What’s going on? Short answer – your WordPress account has been hacked.

More than likely you have been running an old version (ie not the current one) and you have succumbed to an exploit.

The two telling signs is that you have two administrator users (one that ou cannot see), and that your permalink structure has changed. There are other things as well but they are the two main ones.

More detailed discussion can be read about it here.

First and foremost, you should be making sure you have a backup of all your files and SQL database (it should be a regular thing anyway!) before making any changes.

Note: All care but no responsibility is taken with the accuracy of this post.

To find the hidden user, go to the /wp-admin/users.php page and click the link near the top of the page to view only Administrators. The page will not show the hidden administrator, but you can “view source” of this page, and you’ll find the additional username somewhere in the HTML. The key thing to find is the user id, which then can be used with the following URL (substituting the hacker’s user id for xx):

http:///wp-admin/user-edit.php?user_id=xx

Once you’re in the page to edit the user, you can change its role back to ‘Subscriber’ and delete the bogus ‘first name’ field. (Also you’ll have to insert an email address so that you can save your changes – just enter any old email address) After saving the changes, return to the normal user list, and select this user and delete it.

Upgrade your WordPress to the latest version, and don’t forget to change your permalink structure. I would also suggest changing your admin password, and having a read of this page to consider other actions to secure your wordpress install.

Finally, thanks to the guys at NachoTech. The post there helped me sort out and fix my WP issues without any loss of data.

Why do I always see MD5 next to a file when I’m about to download? What do I need to do with it?Is it important?

MD5 (Message digest 5) is used for a variety of things, but what you are probably interested in is that it can be used to verify the integrity of a file.

Why would you want to do that? Well, to see if the orginal file has been altered in any way (eg malicious code intserted into it etc).

How does it work?

Download the file as well the the MD5 has key (which will be a long string of numbers)
Grab a MD5 checker (such as the one here), and paste the MD5 key into this as well as point the checker to your downloaded file.
The checker will tell you whether the MD5 matches ie. you have an unaltered file. Simple!

Oh, for all you nerds that want to know more about MD5, have a read of RFC1321

Like it or hate it – Twitter is here to stay. Its a unique kind of social networking. If you compare if to Facebook, it’s like sending status updates to the friends (or followers in Twitter speak).

I come across a fabulous use of Twitter last week – unfortunately it was related to a tragedy that it is still unfolding as this post is being written.

Twitter can be used to get live news updates from either individuals or from large news conglomerates. And the best thing is if you dont have a twitter account is you don’t need it!

Go to http://search.twitter.com/ and type in something you want updates on. The search result will list Tweets containing your search string from any Twitter user.

If it’s a hot topic your screen will advise you of new matches. All you have to do is click on refresh to get the new tweets.

I used this unique tweet search to find tweets from everyone from the recent Air France plane disappearance. Amazing some of the stories I read, and my search results were being updated at the rate of about one tweet per second.

Have a play around with it. Very handy tool on the internet.

I must say they are quite well presented and very informative. The neat little effect used to deliver these plain english explanantions is brilliant.

The URL for these videos is http://au.youtube.com/user/leelefever

There are quite a varied range of videos there – from plain english explanations of wikis to electing a US president.

Google, in competition with Internet Explorer and Firefox, is set to release their own browser tomorrow – named Chrome.

The good news is that the beta release of the browser will be open source. It promises to be complete, yet simple.

Google have have released a comic book telling you about the new browser. In typical Google fashin, it is innovative and works quite well. Better than just a simple web page full of text.

One thing I have found intersting is what I’ve read about the tabbed browsing. I have found with other browsers that when you close a tab, the moemory that it uses is not reclaimed fully and there is a it of fragmentation (or bloating of memory). Chrome claims to fix this …. according to the comic book.

Let’s see how it gos.

I wouldn’t normally write about stuff like this, but I grew up with Space Invaders and I think it changed the video gaming world as we know it today. Well, it actually was the very beginning.

Space Invaders? was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, and released in June 1978. It was originally manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan, and was later licensed for production in the United States by the Midway division of Bally. Space Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games and the aim is to defeat waves of aliens with a laser cannon to earn as many points as possible. In designing the game, Nishikado drew inspiration from popular media: Breakout (remember that old brick game?), The War of the Worlds (interesting), and Star Wars (who would of believed it). To complete it, he had to design custom hardware and development tools.

Though VERY simple by today’s standards, with basic two-dimensional graphics, it was one of the forerunners of modern video gaming and helped the video game industry become a global industry – it wasn’t just a game anymore. It is so popular in Japan that the game caused a temporary shortage of 100 yen coins in Japan, and by 2007 had earned Taito US$500 million in revenue.

The game has been inspirational for other video games, rereleased on numerous platforms, and led to several sequels. Space invaders part III was my favourite.

The 1980 Atari 2600 version quadrupled the system’s sales and became the first “killer app” for video game consoles. Amazing that, especially when you look at the graphics, that something so simple was (and still is) so popular.

Ahhhh the memories…..

Europe’s biggest games convention has marked the event with a homage to the alien “shoot-em-up” as well as 500 exhibitors showing how far the industry has come since then.

Space Invaders has been immortalised by Guinness World Records as the number one arcade game of all time.

Game developer Taito is commemorating the game’s anniversary with a worldwide Space Invaders tournament, which will conclude on August 26th.

The Space Invaders shrine can be found here, where you can play it online also.

Or, play it here on the this site.

I knew I had to get into the SQL database, and I don’t pretend to be an expert in playing around with tables etc, but I have done some (very) basic editing via PHPMyAdmin.

The problem with Mediawiki was that I unable to overtype a new password, and select MD5 to encrypt it as it was showing a binary field (as shown in the full post):

After a substantial amount of time Googling away, I found the fix. And as the website I got it off said, I’m posting it here for my own reference because it took so long to find.

Within PHPMyAdmin where you can input queries etc,
UPDATE user SET user_password = md5(CONCAT(’1-’,md5(‘newpassword’))) WHERE user_id = 1;
