The release of the iPhone 4S has caused the (now) usual rush of customers wanting the phone as soon as it’s released. I must say, I’m rather impressed with the improvements over the iPhone 4.

Also I have seen a few users that have experienced problems also. Every one of them has been a user issue that I have seen, and I just wanted to share an experience that I have come across a few times already.

A friend was complaining about low volume levels whilst on a phone call. Yes the volume was turned right up. I thought ‘mmm might have a dud iPhone here’ but before I gave my friend the bad news, I asked her ‘dumb question, but have you taken off the original plastic screen protector?’ The response was a roar of laughter which told me that this was the problem.

So, it doesn’t hurt to go and check the basics first. With the film that is on the phone when you take it out of the box, the phone speaker is covered up – hence the low volume problem.

Failing that, try a hard reset of the phone before contacting Apple.

I had jsut upgraded my mobile phone from WM5 to Windows Mobile 6 and noticed that be default your SIM contacts display.

Great if you don’t already have contacts, but how do you filter or hide of the viewing of the SIM contacts if you don’t want to see them?

Well, I found a few forum threads that tell you to get into the phone settings and change the appropriate option, but my iMate JASJAM does not have such an option.

Next I found a registry hackto fix it up. But my JASJAM did not have that registry key. Mmm If I add the key will it work? One way to find out

Well it did, and this is what I did:

Disclaimer: Changing or adding registry keys/values is done at your own risk. I take no responsibility for any loss of data or unexpected results.

* Downloaded CERegEditor from Freeware PPC and installed it on my laptop.

* With the JASJAM connected to my laptop via USB, I ran the utility and added the ShowSIM REG_DWORD key to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Phone with a value of 00000000.

Note: to view the SIM contacts, change the value to 00000001.

Found this on the SC website the other other day:

Hackers are able to send a corrupt JPEG image to a RAZR which would run malicious code if viewed, according to the ZDI advisory, released on Tuesday. Malicious code could force the RAZR to make unwanted calls or send unwanted messages, for example.

The flaw exists in the JPEG thumbprint component of the EXIF parser. EXIF, or Exchangable Image File format, is a set of tags that can be embedded in image files, which might include the location where the image was taken or the camera used to take it.

When the user tries to view the image, a memory corruption is caused and malicious code can be run on the phone.

A firmware update has been released from Motorola to patch the vulnerability.

To read more about this vulnerability, go here.

Getting the iPhone released in Australia has been a long time coming for companies – more so the consumer. Peoples have been, up to now, relying on buying them from Overseas via Ebay and getting them unlocked so they can use them here.

In the last few days, Vodafone has announced that it will sell them, as well as Optus being rumoured to do the same. There is no doubt the iPhone will be a hit in Australia.

Today, Cnet has reported that Telstra will also sell the iPhone. This is great news, as Telstra’s decision to offer the iPhone points to an imminent release of a highly-anticipated 3G model.

Telstra have not made an official announcement as yet.

Read CNET’s article here.

Update 19/6/08:

According to The Australian:

IN a case of better late than never, Telstra, the gorilla of the telco market, will come to Apple’s iPhone launch party but may lag its rivals by almost two weeks with the handset.
Telstra will join Optus and Vodafone in launching the new 3G version of Apple’s new iPhone in July and Telstra chief Sol Trujillo may make an announcement next week.

Vodafone and Optus will begin selling the iPhone on July 11 and the much hyped widget will likely drive plenty of feet through Apple’s new CBD Sydney retail store which dwarfs Telstra’s new concept store directly across the road. Apple’s shop opened this evening, with Apple tragics coming from as far afield as San Francisco to witness the event.

Telstra stayed quiet as its rivals wracked up marketing points by standing in the glow of the local iPhone launch, but will now go ahead and sell the device according to people close to the company. The telco is targeting a date of July 22, they said.

The full story can be read here.

I’ve always wanted to track or log my exercise without too much hassle. Nokia have released a beta version of such a product called SportsTracker.

It uses the GPS fucntion in your mobile phone to map your exercise activities. These can be uploaded to the Nokia sportstracker site and you can view your route in Google Maps – very handy indeed.

There are a large number of phones currently supported. I use it on my Nokia 6110 navigator and have yet to have any problems – even though it is still in a ‘beta’ stage of development.

<script type="text/javascript"

Kudos to Nokia for such a great piece of software that is available free of charge.

Here are a few screenshots:
