iPhone 4S Low Volume

The release of the iPhone 4S has caused the (now) usual rush of customers wanting the phone as soon as it’s released. I must say, I’m rather impressed with the improvements over the iPhone 4.

Also I have seen a few users that have experienced problems also. Every one of them has been a user issue that I have seen, and I just wanted to share an experience that I have come across a few times already.

A friend was complaining about low volume levels whilst on a phone call. Yes the volume was turned right up. I thought ‘mmm might have a dud iPhone here’ but before I gave my friend the bad news, I asked her ‘dumb question, but have you taken off the original plastic screen protector?’ The response was a roar of laughter which told me that this was the problem.

So, it doesn’t hurt to go and check the basics first. With the film that is on the phone when you take it out of the box, the phone speaker is covered up – hence the low volume problem.

Failing that, try a hard reset of the phone before contacting Apple.

VLC for itunes app

VLC, argubly the best video player out there, has finally come out for the iPhone. Check it out in iStore – you’ll be pleasantly surprised that it is actually free too!

So, let’s give it a quick roadtest. I have a iPhone 3GS and was keen to give it a go as most of the reviews I had seen were on a iPhone4.

What I planed to do was to try a couple of different format video files and see if there was any performance issues or noticeable differences in the playback of each.

Once the app was installed, I fired it up I was presented with a screen such as this:

Ahhh so that’s how it will work. You need iTunes to drop the files into the shared app area and then sync. Not a problem.

So I did. 1 X 150M AVI file that I got off my video camera, a 380M DIVX file and a 20M FLV file got thrown on the iPhone.

Results:
* The AVI file was laggy in the video but the sound wa sfine
* The DIVX played without a hitch
* The FLV played for a few seconds, and since then I haven been able to get them to play. It’s pixelated beyond belief and I thought my iPhone had actually locked up.

From what my neighbour was telling me, FLVs play fine on his iPhone so it just may be the 3GS that struggles.

Overall, not too bad for a first effort and I’m sure there will be some updates along the way for this app. I would definitely pay for the app as I have been a big fan of VLC for ages.

How to use multitasking on iOS4

The only thing I don’t like is that you cannot select which individual apps you want to multitask – a pain becuase you are some I wouldn’t want running all the time. Other than that it works OK.

Apple iOS4 quick rundown

So what’s the buzz with the new software release for the iPhone 3G and 3GS? In summary, you get:

* Wallpapers for the home screen – yeah nothing new for most other phones on the market but great on the iPhone (now)

* Multitasking – great innovation but I would prefer to be able to select what apps I want running in the background (not just all)

* Better mail interface – You can separate the viewing of different email accounts, or have them together

* Systemwide spell checker

* Sorting of apps into folders – awesome idea as I have a LOT of apps on my phone

* Create playlists ON your iPod

* Message app improvements – for example you can search through your messages

* iBooks – so you can read books from the iTunes digital bookstore

* Digital zoom on your camera – yeah, still no replacement for a ‘real camera’ . Note: There is no optical zoom on these cameras. Google what the diff is if you don’t know

* Change your default search engine in Safari

I have read that the upgrade takes 30 mins, but for me it took closer to 2 hhours when you take into consideration the downloading of the new OS, restore backup and a couple of PC (required) reboots. Oh, and make sure your iTunes is up to date before you start too.

I’ve only had it running for about 24 hours, but the phone performs quite well, and the new features I’m certainly taking advantage of on my 3GS iPhone. Well done, Apple.
